Brown, Joseph Rogers

(26 ene. 1810, Warren, R.I., EE.UU.–23 jul. 1876, islas de Shoals, N.H.).

Inventor y fabricante estadounidense. Perfeccionó y produjo una máquina de graduación lineal muy precisa en 1850, y luego desarrolló un calibrador nonio, aplicando posteriormente los métodos del nonio al transportador. Con Lucian Sharpe fundó la compañía Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Co. Su calibre micrométrico (ver micrómetro) apareció en 1867. Inventó una máquina talladora de engranajes de reloj, una máquina fresadora universal y (quizás su mejor innovación) una máquina de amolar o rectificadora universal, en la cual se procedía primero a endurecer los artículos y luego se amolaban o rectificaban, aumentando al mismo tiempo la exactitud y eliminando los desechos.
